5 Great American Humorists of the Early to Mid-20th Century

5 Great American Humorists of the Early to Mid-20th Century 5 Great American Humorists of the Early to Mid-20th Century 5 Great American Humorists of the Early to Mid-20th Century By Mark Nichol Humor is in the eye (or, frequently, the ear) of the beholder, but if you prefer elegance in your entertainment and wish to find inspiration for your own mirthful musings, check out the works of these five twentieth-century titans of comic composition. 1. Robert Benchley Benchley was a master of parody and surreal humor, often writing about an everyman discombobulated by the modern world. He wrote for leading magazines, then went to Hollywood, where he intended only to write but also frequently appeared on camera. He had modest success in mostly small roles, sometimes alongside top actors but in some of their more forgettable films. (He is probably best known in this capacity as the provider of exposition in the Bob Hope–Bing Crosby classic Road to Utopia.) Benchley found more satisfaction writing and appearing in short film parodies such as the Oscar winner How to Sleep. The Best of Robert Benchley is a good introduction to his writing style. 2. Dorothy Parker Parker, the model for every woman who dares to have a biting wit, overcame an unhappy childhood and weathered alcoholism, several suicide attempts, numerous unsuccessful marriages and affairs, and criticism of her leftist politics to become one of the great comic writers of the twentieth century. Her short story collections include Laments for the Living and After Such Pleasures, she published poetry in volumes titled Enough Rope, Sunset Gun, and Death and Taxes, and Constant Reader contains many of the book reviews she wrote for the New Yorker. Parker later worked on stage and film scripts, including A Star Is Born, the screenplay of which was nominated for an Academy Award. 3. S. J. Perelman This master parodist, considered the pioneering American surrealist, is noted for his wordplay, including metaphors, non sequiturs, and obscure references and terms, and is celebrated overall for his devotion to the absurd. Perhaps you need to know nothing more than that he was the screenwriter for several of the best Marx Brothers films. His works, more accurately referred to as sketches than short stories, are collected under such titles as Acres and Pains (about the ordeal of owning a Pennsylvania farm) and Crazy Like a Fox or go for the obvious with The Best of S. J. Perelman. His talent declined as he grew older, but his best is among the best. 4. George S. Kaufman Kaufman’s humor wasn’t written to be read he was a prolific playwright and sometime screenwriter but his scripts are exemplars of writing that induces laughter. Usually in collaboration with one or more other writers his professional partners included Edna Ferber, George and Ira Gershwin, Moss Hart, and Morrie Ryskind he wrote (and directed and produced) many enduring stage plays and musicals, though he was said to dislike the latter art form. He shared the Pulitzer Prize for the comedy You Can’t Take It with You and the musical Of Thee I Sing! Other memorable works include Dinner at Eight, Stage Door, and The Man Who Came to Dinner (all of which, like You Can’t Take It with You, were adapted for the screen, all to great acclaim). 5. James Thurber This American writer and cartoonist, who as a result of a childhood accident lost an eye and was nearly blind in the other, produced an impressive array of wryly amusing stories and illustrations. The book of short stories that brought him fame is called My Life and Hard Times; he also wrote some essays about language, including â€Å"The New Vocabularianism,† â€Å"The Spreading ‘You Know,’† and â€Å"What Do You Mean It Was Brillig?† He also cowrote a stage play (later adapted into a film) called The Male Animal, and late in life appeared in the theatrical revue A Thurber Carnival, based on his stories, in a segment called â€Å"File and Forget.† He is best known for his short story â€Å"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty† (loosely and, to Thurber’s mind, poorly adapted into a movie), about a timid daydreamer. Thurber is the only person on this list who was not a member of the loose-knit assemblage of wits who formed the Algonquin Round Table (named after the New York City hotel they frequently dined at), whose members sometimes collaborated creatively. (He was, in fact, a critic of the group’s sometimes vicious practical jokes and some of its members, including Dorothy Parker, later disparaged it as well.) One of them was James a very aggressive and vocal student who was the leader extracurricular team of the school. The other was John known for his intelligence but agile and reserved personality. They were given the responsibility to select five students in each team to be groomed as the new winning team for the forthcoming debating competition. The committee on Extra-curricular Activities headed by the principal of the school was finally to decide two students to be sent for participating in the competition. He prepared a team of ten such students mainly from senior student group and asked them to participate in debating programs scheduled in the school for training them and asked every participant to prepare for effective presentation. Early record of debating will be a plus point" James received 20 applications from all classes. Every one was encouraged to join for the grooming sessions. Grooming sessions were divided into nine debating sessions. Each session had different subjects to debate on. All participants were divided into four groups of 5 students each. Instructural planning and design Essay Example for Free

Instructural planning and design Essay It is highly recognized by people that strong educational background and good educational status juxtaposed with a strong conviction to reach a goal could alleviate a person’s status in life. I believe that teachers share the burden of the parents for encouraging children to learn. It is highly regarded that teachers are the next person who has the power to sway children to a path towards the future. It is natural then that selecting programs and lessons for the students are vital in honing the abilities of the children and to help them learn more. Apt learning tools then are essentially the number one concern of the teachers. If teachers have the power to influence children then it would be necessary that they take the load seriously. A failure on the part of the teacher might become a loss for the child’s chances in the near future. Teachers in this case then would have to create plans that could holistically hone the capabilities and abilities of the children as well as encouraging them towards the path of a future determined to attain better education. The best way to do this then is that the teacher should be able to create plans that are recreational in nature as well as informative. I believe that the best way for creating this atmosphere is for teachers to be able to share the enthusiasm that he/she may have for the particular subject that he/she is teaching. Over enthusiasm might be too much optimism but enough impression could leave a definite mark on the children. I find it helpful to create an atmosphere that knowledge could give us the power. Along with this ambiance are the suitable programs and lessons that would be discussed in class. The first thing to consider then is the instructional levels. This level is where a teacher would gauge his/her lessons to a right medium of instruction that he/she would adopt. Dealing with pre-school students would require patience and a level of instruction fit for the students. Take for example in teaching children to read. It should be noted by the teacher that the best way to do this is for him/her to be able to recognize the reading capabilities of each and every student that he/she is handling. The first thing to notice here then is to see if whether or not the capacities of the students are somewhat in tuned with each other. It seems that there would be instances where reading lessons would elicit different responses form the students. The most important thing that the teacher should be able to grasp here is that in the formative years of the children, there could be instances that learning disabilities might occur. Necessarily, the teacher should be able to identify these problems so that he/she could be able to address these problems. A good start would be for the teachers to encourage children to read aloud in the classroom and establish ways that could gain the participation of the children. There would be instances that a child might be reluctant to read in front of the class since he/she would fear to commit mistakes. That is why encouragement is a best solution. The development levels of each if these students may vary then. The background of the students would have to be taken into consideration. There are natural instances that a student may develop faster than others. So in this case the teacher should be able to devise a plan that would encourage the fast learners without disregarding those who are slow to catch up. It is appropriate this way since this would not promote discrimination. Discrimination might only lead to a child to be discouraged about his/her skills. Aside from the proper instructional level, the teacher should be able to grasp the development levels of each student that she has. A best way to do this is through the non verbal communication between you and the students. A simple frown might be seen in different ways but inside a classroom it could be seen as not being able to understand what was said. As what was implied above, it would then be healthy for teachers to be able to adjust along the way for the benefit of the entirety of the class (Siobhan Leahy, 2005). A good example to address developmental level is for the teacher to realize which level he/she is teaching. A math subject during the formative years would be essential for the secondary level of the students. It would then be advisable that the teacher focus on creating an atmosphere where children would not have to resort memorization but also have the full understanding of what they are memorizing. The next thing to be considered is the learning disabilities of the students. Younger children could have the ability to learn to hide these disabilities that is why teachers are suggested to have constant vigilance. It is not an easy task to know which student have learning disabilities and people could not automatically tell (Learning Disabilities, 2007). An example for this instance is a student who is dyslexic. Having a hard time to decipher words and letters is problem for the students and teachers as well since this could hinder the progress that is needed for the student. What the teacher could do if he/she would encounter this problem is to approach the student in a way that would not embarrass him/her. After such deed would be done, the best way for children to catch up with this disability is for the teacher to suggest tutors for the child. This tutor may be the teacher or a special teacher or the parents of the child who has full knowledge in addressing this problem. Alerting the parents could very well help in this instance. In a classroom setting the teacher could devise a lesson plan that could help by using the other senses of the children. It was said that multi-sensory teaching in the classroom could help improve a child’s learning disability. Perusing of the sense of touch could be helpful by asking the students to have a creative output of the letters or numbers. Creative in a sense that the teacher could make the letters or numbers be available for the sense of touch especially when it could help the children cling to have a tangible image of what they are reading (Bradford, 2000). Going back to the reading levels, a teacher then should be able to use appropriate reading materials that his/her students would need. As I have repeatedly said earlier, students’ reaction to a reading material may vary and their abilities may also vary. In this aspect, the teacher could be able to help the child’s development through the parents or the family. It was said that the family, especially the parents, have a great influence on the child. A home conducive for learning is the best recourse for this problem. Of course this may be a problem since not all households are the same for the children. It would then be the responsibility of the teacher to double her efforts in teaching the children. As was also suggested above, teachers should be flexible enough for the betterment of his/her teaching strategies. It would then be necessary that the teacher could be able to devise a concrete curriculum. This curriculum then could serve as a rough draft of what the teacher ought to achieve by the end of every semester. Naturally, these curriculums are usually rigid. Creating a flexible curriculum then could be the best recourse especially when taking into consideration what was said above. The importance of this alignment of curricular goals is that would generate a standard that the teacher ought to be teaching the child at the same time it could give him/her a better idea of what should be learned in the level of what he/she is teaching. The standard then could be checked through the standards of the school. Making the curriculum flexible then would mean that the standards are there but the activities that would be done would vary from time to time especially when other teachers have a tendency to just create a repetitive scene or method of what they were doing for the past years that they were teaching. Take for example, if a teacher is teaching the basics of math and number then arranging the lesson plan according to the standards set would help and then activities would become flexible according to the necessity that these activities would have for a certain aspect of the subject. Some students seldom aim in ‘getting by’ the subject without full understanding that upon reaching the secondary level of math, they have a hard time grasping the complexities that are presented to them. It is essential then that the teacher choose curriculums and activities fit for the goal of understanding math rather than just letting the students memorize the numbers. Leaving a certain shadow of the numbers in the back of a child’s mind would be helpful. In doing what was suggested as a solution for the learning disability, the teacher could then leave the impression of a memory that the child could easily access in his/her mind. Let’s say the number ‘5’, a string glued to the shape of a ‘5’ could help a child in remembering that a five usually feels like making an‘s’ but with a much rigid first curve above and a horizontal line for the top. The plans and how the teachers execute these plans would have to be taken into consideration. Becoming a teacher is no mean feat especially when you have the power to influence the students and it is up to the teacher therefore on how a student might perceive the educational perspective in life. Mercedes :: essays research papers

The 1996 Mercedes E320 sustained crash damage to the passenger side front. After we set up and measured the vehicle on the caro-liner frame rack, we found there to be extensive panel, sub frame, and suspension damage. Including consequential interior damage, IE; Driver/passenger airbags deployed, dash panel assembly, and passenger airbags deployed, dash panel assembly, and passenger side mirror. After a complete damage assessment report, we then began disassembly of all damaged panels and assemblies. After the disassembly we decided which parts would be salvaged off of our 1997 Mercedes E320, which parts would be purchased new or those which would need to be straightened and refinished. Once the damaged panels were removed we were able to attach the 10-ton hydraulic ram assembly to the frame rack and began the frame straightening repairs. Our initial pulls were to fix the sway problem of the passenger side front sub frame. This was accomplished by wrapping a chain around the misaligned sub frame, pulling in a straight, level manner opposite the direction of the misalignment. We did several pulls in this manner, stress relieving, before and during, with a ball peen hammer before repositioning for the next pull until brought back into specification. We then positioned our 10-ton ram to the passenger front for repair of the frame rail mash and sag situation sustained on impact. We wrapped the chain around crash impact bar and used it as the hook up point for our pulls. Pulling and stress receiving until it also was within specifications. Our final pull was to the suspension passenger side A-arm. We simply attached our chains to the A-arm and pulled it back into positio n. At this point, we could now begin sectioning and panel removal. This was first done by deciding which panels were to be removed and which were to be repaired. Then all of the spot welds that needed to be removed were marked with a paint marker, so as to only to remove the necessary welds. Some spot welds were located underneath seam sealer and or insulation. We then removed the material with a hand torch to burn the seam sealer, then a steel bristled brush to scratch off the burnt material. We then center drilled all of the marked spot welds with an 1/8† drill bit, followed up by a 5/16† spot weld removal bit to drill out the spot welds along all of the panels to be removed.

Analysis Between Dutch Baroque and French Realism

Analysis Between Dutch Baroque and French Realism BY Kayaking Analysis Between Dutch Baroque and French Realism Johannes Vermeer The Milkmaid Circa 1657-1658 45. Xx CM Jean-Franà §ois Millet Woman Baking Bread 1854 55 x 46 CM Rasmussen, Amsterdam, Netherlands Rasmussen, Otter, Netherlands Oil Painting Oil Painting Dutch Baroque vs.. French Realism Throughout the ages, art has been one of many ways to communicate with our history. Every painting, drawing, sculpture, etc. Tells us a story of that time period and if we look hard enough, we can even feel what the people of that time may have been lining. In this essay, two pieces of art will be introduced and interpreted: The Milkmaid (circa 1657-1658) by Johannes Vermeer which is a Dutch Baroque oil painting that's 45. 5 x 41 CM located in Rasmussen, Amsterdam, Netherlands and Woman Baking Bread (1854) by Jean-Franà §ois Millet which is a French Realism oil painting that's 55 x 46 CM located in Rasmussen Kerr ¶leer-MÃ'Ëœleer, Otter, Netherlands. The agenda of this comparison is to understand different styles between the Dutch Baroque and French Realism, and to show how Vermeer andMillet deal with the same every day domestic theme in a different way. During the 17th century, artists were focusing more on emotion and drama, also known as the Baroque time period. The overall style of Baroque art in paintings is â€Å"detailed realism in portraits, expansive landscapes, and a focus on the dramatic including the contrast between light and shadow and the use of rich, deep colors. † (Minded, 2. 05) Vermeer worked mainly in the Dutch Baroque style and does a magnificent Job in portraying and bringing to life an everyday task in the life of a servant girl in The Milkmaid. On the other hand, Woman Baking Bread was painted in the Realist style during the 19th century. More specifically, this piece of art was painted in the French Realist style, which came about after the Revolution of 1848. Millet's â€Å"use of a simple, natural style with warmer colors and heavy application of paint† (Minded, 3. 15) are characteristic traits in a Realist painting. Both works of art magnificently depicts the everyday domestic life. True to both styles, they both realistically depict a woman doing an every day task. Vermeer's is that of a milkmaid oaring milk and Millet's is that of a woman baking bread. However, both were painted in very different ways. Whereas Vermeer's work is a prime example of a Dutch Baroque painting with its realistic way of portraying an everyday task, the use of bold colors, the detail, and the deep contrast between light and dark, Millet's work is a prime example of a French Realist painting where the colors are warmer and much more simple. Vermeer was well known for his painstaking attention to detail. For example, â€Å"the Jug and hands of the servant in The Milkmaid reveals a number of enticements, created as the artist struggled to depict them convincingly. (Frantic, 7)

Animal Farm, by George Orwell Essay - 581 Words

In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the pig Napoleon uses specific tactics to gain power and control over the animal farm. Some of these techniques include controlling information through education, scapegoating, use of fear, swaying public opinion and blind obedience. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Throughout the novel, the most prominent way that Napoleon gained power was through controlling the education that the animals received. In the beginning of the novel, Snowball believes in educating all of the animals on Animal Farm, young and old, by trying to organize committees and instituting classes devoted to reading and writing (page 39). However, Napoleon openly states that educating the young is more important that the old.†¦show more content†¦Every single thing that goes wrong on the farm is immediately deemed as being Snowballs doing. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; The use of fear is another tactic practiced by Napoleon and his followers. Jones would come back! †¦Surely†¦ there is no one among you who wants to see Jones come back?quot; (42). Again when Snowball is driven out, Napoleon uses public executions to show the other animals what will happen if they make contact with Snowball (82). nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Blind obedience plays a role in Napoleons rise to power. Because the animals dont have an education, they dont bother to think for themselves and instead take everything Squealer tells them for the truth. Examples of this are mainly portrayed by Boxer, who upholds the mottos quot;I will work harder!quot; and quot;Napoleon is always right!quot; (81).
