How Jonathan Swift constructs and uses Gulliver in ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ Jonathan Swift was an English 18th century writer who supported the Monarchy and was a Royalist. He wrote this story while in a club, called ‘The Scriblerus Club’, in which there were 2 other members; Alexander Pope and John Arbuthnot. All three believed that the society they lived in was corrupt. In this story, Swift indirectly describes the many different faults with man-kind. The story is written in a satiristic style that makes fun of the bad things in society. Swift uses Gulliver to show how corrupt and cruel the 18th century English society was. Swift constructs Gulliver’s character through his first person narrative style. His narratives reveal that he is a rather unemotional character. This is shown when he describes and recounts dangerous situations in a matter-of-fact and passive style. A clear example of this is when his ship was destroyed in a storm and all of his companions were lost or dead; ‘Twelve of our crew were dead’ and ‘we therefore trusted ourselves to the mercy of the waves’. Swift is clearly using Gulliver to represent many of the 18th century politicians who had a stiff upper-lip and were unemotional. He is used to satirise 18th Century English society’s stereotypical ‘stiff-upper lip’ approach in life, a character trait which may also be a source of humour for the reader. The selected journal article for this assignment is Sources and Types of Confidence Identified by World Class Sport Performers written by Kate Hays, Ian Maynard, Owen Thomas and Mark Bawden which was published in the year of 2007. Different ways of examining the sports confidence have been analyzed in this research paper by following the qualitative research approach in the area of the sports psychology. The strengths and weaknesses of the qualitative research approaches used in the research paper will be discussed in this paper and the effectiveness of the use of the mixed method of research study. The details about the future design of the research area by using the mixed method will be also discussed in this paper. Critical Analysis: Research method and findings of the research study: The research study was conducted to understand the different factors of the sports and the sports development in athletes competing on the world class stage in the area of the sports psychology. The whole research study was completed by using qualitative research method. Literature review was conducted for developing the rationale of the research study. After that the data were collected by interviewing the sports personnel. In this concern, 14 athletes were interviewed or understanding what they think about the sports development. Out of the 14 athletes, 7 were male and other 7 were female sports personnel. The age group selected for this purpose was 21years to 48 years. Most of the sports personnel had medaled in a major championship. The research design of this study was the exploratory research design. The interviews were conducted by using some open-ended questions (Hays et al. 2007). The interviews were semi-structured in nature. The researchers have followed an interview guide for conducting the semi-structured interviews. They have divided the results of this research study into two categories. The first one is the sources of the confidence regarding the sports and the second one is the types of sports confidence. After collecting the data, the sources of the sports confidences were categorized into 9 different global dimensions (Hays et al. 2007). Strengths of the research study: The main advantage of this research study is the use of the human participants for conducting the research work. As the data were collected from some well developed sports personnel, the data might be reliable. The researcher have considered both of the male and females for collecting the data (Hays et al. 2007). This was a great advantage of the research study as the psychology of men and women are different. In order to get a balanced response from the respondents, the researchers have chosen both of the male and female respondents. Use of the open ended questions in the interviews, helped the researchers to get the detailed information about the perceptions of the sports personnel. They were not bounded to answer some specific facts of the area of sports confidence. This helped a lot to gather the in-depth knowledge about the perceptions of the sports personnel in sports confidence (Hays et al. 2007). Weaknesses of the research study: The main limitation of this research study also associated with the sample selection. Firstly, the sample size of the research study was too small. Gathering the research data from only 14 sports personnel are not enough for concluding the research findings in the area of psychology. Another limitation of the research study was that the sport personnel were from individual sports fields. The findings of the research study were unable to focus in the area of the team sports. Therefore, the research study was unable to provide a generalized view about the confidence in sports field. The sample size of the research study was small due to the time limit of the research study (Easterby-Smith, Thorpe and Jackson 2012). The method of the research study was also responsible for the small size of the sample population. The data collection procedure of the research study was only the interview. Interviewing a large number of people is not an easy task to be conducted as the sports personnel ar e not always available. The data analysis procedure of the qualitative research is also very complex. Analyzing the transcripts of the interviews and then fund the key findings from them with the details about their perceptions about the sports confidence is very complicated. The validity of the samples could not be guaranteed as fully reliable source as there was no way to be confident about that the transcripts of the interviews are stating the actual perceptions of them regarding the sports confidence. Future Direction: Future research study should be done in this field by considering greater sample size for the data. Only 14 sport personnel are considered for collecting the qualitative data of the research study. Smaller sample size is drawback of the qualitative research approach. Use of only interview method is not enough for collecting the data about the perception of the sports personnel. In order to use greater sample size, the research study should be conducted by using some quantitative data also (Chandra and Sharma 2013). The quantitative data should be collected from the sport personnel from different areas and different sports field. More area should be covered for the data collection of the future research study in this area. Different sport personnel of different field and the sports personnel who are used to participate in team sports should be considered as the sample population of the future research study. The research work should also give focus on the area of the area of the devel oping sport personnel. The environment of the sports is changing day by day and different types of sports are rising in the area of the global sports environment (Cameron 2009). Therefore, the new sports should be considered for the research study. It is very important to understand how the sports personnel of the new sports are thinking about the confidence in the specific sport field. The future research should cover a vast area where only the successful sports personnel will not be considered, more focus will be given for understanding the perceptions all the lower level and upper level employees. The findings of this research study will be used as the empirical data in the future research study in this area. Based in these data and other data from the previous literature, the hypothesis would be developed in the future research and the new data will be collected and then compared with these data for understanding the general viewpoint regarding the sport confidence (Creswell et al. 2010). Future research study by using the mixed research method will help to reduce the limitations of the research in the area of the sports psychology. Mixed Research method: According to Yin (2011), the mixed research methods are the most effective for conducting the academic research work. This research study also will be able to provide more effective results in future by using the mixed research methods. The literature research will be used for developing background details about the sports psychology. The data gathered from the literature research will be the secondary data of the research study. The research studies done by using both of the primary and secondary data and both of the quantitative and qualitative data are referred as the mixed method of the research work. Many television shows, like the show ER, are based in the setting of the hospital’s emergency room. Clearly, when you watch the show you can differentiate fact from fiction on what goes on in an actual emergency room versus what Hollywood incorporates into the show. For example, when watching one of these shows, one will notice that there is an emphasis placed on the relationships between the hospital’s staff, whereas in reality an emphasis is, obviously,  placed on the individuals that need medical attention. Another emphasis is on humor and the comedy aspect of the show. Although the humor aspect of these shows is exaggerated, that is not to say that there is no humor in the emergency room because that is far from the truth. When one thinks of the act of laughing, the emergency room rarely is a scene that pops into one’s head. Because of the nature of the emergency room and the clientele that require its services, humor is not commonly accepted in such a place. Like a funeral home, an emergency room is a place where laughter and fun are generally  not accepted, but unlike a funeral home, the ER is a much more stressful environment and requires release of built up tension through humor. Also, the workers who work in the emergency room, such as doctors, nurses, and other care providers, undergo rigorous training to become professionals in their careers, and are required to act accordingly. In the social worker’s training, emphasis is placed highly on professionalism and ethics. They are discouraged from letting their personal emotions escape their professional appearance and, instead, are instructed to remain contained and composed. Their training also encourages them to keep a solemn tone and demeanor. Because of this, hospital humor is not a concept that many people believe exists. Although the facility and the faculty of the hospital do not appear to tolerate humor in the workplace, laughter and humor find their way into the establishment of the ER in various ways. The primary use of humor in the emergency room is to ease the tension that builds up. The emergency room is an extremely tense environment due to the nature of the patients’ injuries. Tension is built up in many individuals, such as the patients, the family of the patients,  and the hospital staff. Because of the large quantity of people in the emergency room at any given time, humor is a necessity for all individuals in the ER. The physical act of laughing relieves tension in the body and relaxes the muscles, as well as promotes a general sense of well-being in an individual. This is something that everyone in the hospital needs, from the family of the patient that is stressing due to the nature of their loved one, all the way to the doctors and surgeons performing the operations necessary to bring someone back to health. Not  only does humor alleviate tension, it makes working in the hospital easier. Humor alleviates the stress of the workers and creates a stronger hospital team out of the staff. With a stronger staff unit, the ER runs more smoothly and can treat the maximum number of patients that it can. By joking around, like giving nicknames to the regular patients and hospital staff and poking fun at the people they work with, the individuals who work in the hospital are more comfortable around each other, therefore leading to a stronger sense of solidarity amongst them. Also, if an individual feels more comfortable in a certain environment,  they will perform their tasks and duties more efficiently and effectively. Finally, humor keeps those that work in traumatic situations from becoming disheartened. Because of the nature of their work, most of the individuals that work in the ER have a high burnout rate. There are so many negative aspects of working in the ER that doctors and other workers cannot handle for an extended period of time. The anxieties due to the unknowns such as how many people will need medical attention, what the nature of their injuries are, etc. cause additional stress to an already stressful schedule. Because accidents can happen at any time, ER workers have to work at night, which is unappealing to many. Because of these negative aspects, ER work is very difficult, and many people who work in this environment eventually want out. Humor lightens the blow of many of these negative aspects, and at least makes working in the hospital a little more bearable. Humor keeps hospital staff from physically becoming depressed. With the mass number of illness, surgery, and death that they are encompassed with, working in the hospital can wipe out one’s physical energy and mental state of well-being. Humor offers a levity of the morose and depressing environment that they are surrounded by each day. The emergency room is not a room that people should take lightly. The very nature of its services that it provides to its clientele prove it to be a serious environment; nevertheless, humor can exist, and even be helpful, in an environment like this. Humor alleviates the tension of all the people in the emergency room, and it creates a stronger sense of family for the staff that work in the emergency room. Finally, humor is what keeps the workers from becoming disheartened and  depressed. With a little bit of laughter in the workplace, all the individuals that come into contact with the emergency room experience a lightened mood, even in the most awful situations. Some more highlights from the latest AHS: About 3.8 million homeowners had lump-sum home equity mortgages, down nearly 20 percent from 2001, when there were 4.7 million such loans.Homeowners occupied more than 72 million homes. Overall, the nation had about 106 million occupied housing units.Renters occupied 33.6 million housing units.The nation’s median mortgage interest rate was 6.7 percent, down from 7.5 percent in 2001.The median value of owner-occupied homes was $140,000.Between 2001 and 2003, the number of owner-occupied units with four or more bedrooms increased by about 1 million to 18.7 million.There were 3 million owner-occupied homes in planned gated communities.The vacancy rate for rental housing units was 9.6 percent, up from 7.8 percent in 2001.On a scale of 1-to-10, with 10 being the best, 3-in-4 homeowners rated their neighborhood an 8 or higher.
